So I know its been a while since you posted this, but I recently found some pretty ok boulderage just behind the middle school that is down the road beyond GW high school.  You have to go behind the fence that is at the backside of the field and follow the most distinct deer path heading to your right if you're looking down the hill.

We should probably keep this on the D.L. because they would probably freak out if too many people were heading back to that area.  If the message board grows too big locally I'll take this topic down so our secret it buried forever!

There is definitely still movement on the MRG front.  We are still having issues finding a location, however.  It has been a bumpy road be we're optimistic and know that we will definitely find a location.  Once we do it won't take long at all to be up and running.  Thanks for staying in touch....continue to do so for sure!  In the mean time we'll keep everyone updated.

Good question.....I wish I has a good answer to it.  Just to get personal for a minute....we were supposed to begin a lease when I moved here the first week of June (the reason my wife and I moved here at that time).  So we were giving ourselves 2 months to build an awesome 6,000-7,000 sqft gym which would be opening any day now.  But our plans with that lease sort of got scrapped and the building we are looking at now is waiting for an approval from the entity which owns it.  That process could take several months.  So it may very well be January before we begin construction on a much smaller sgft-age gym.  BUT, we want to be sure to explain to everyone that this smaller area of shared space is one which we view as temporary.  We fully plan to build a full scale gym once we get off our feet.  So theres the story....

Also, still working on figuring out a link to get immediately from the msg board back to the website...thanks for being patient!

Any new updates on the gym?  Anything still going on?

Just a quick FYI, The Raleigh Rock Yard is no longer open.  The fire marshal shut'em down last month.  However, the Triangle Rock Club www.trianglerockclub.com is a new climbing gym that opened up in Raleigh late last year.  Eldorado walls, 9000 sqft., 32ft wide 14ft high top out boulder, etc...  Check out the website for all the details and directions.  If you’re coming from Lejeune you're probably a Marine.  Marines get a 17.75% discount at TRC.

Thanks for posting this here...I appreciated reading it.  I think anyone starting a gym or going into a gym in a position of management should read this.

PRSmith, thanks for the feedback.  A place for cavers to workout and practice rope ascention is something we've overlooked!  When I worked at the WVU wall the Grotto Club was in there almost every Thur doing that so I don't know how I didnt think of it.  That sounds awesome...we'll definately incorporate that in our design.

Yeah, our original location plans feel through, but we're pushing on.  Unfortunately it may take until the end of '08 or begining of '09 for the place we want now to work out.  We are psyched about all the support and feedback everyone has been giving us....just makes me more and more pumped to push hard to open ASAP!

Keep on posting!  We look forward to the day we can meet everyone in person at the gym:)

"...Canton Ohio or Durham NC..."

What the heck?!? Not picking, but that is a pretty big spread. Travel much?

I am very excited to be getting a gym that is closer to me than driving to Canton Ohio or Durham NC.  I am a pretty new climber, I like to hope I'm not a big ol' gumby, but I probably am.  Smiley  I love to climb outside, but the gym has a place in my heart and this summer has been a great gym summer what with all the crappy weekend weather, so sad it wasn't here.  I can't wait until you guys get going.

A couple of the things I really like in a gym are some contours, and I don't mean that have to be super expensive art walls.  Just some contour and ledges to really give a challenge.  I also saw another poster had written something about having a place for some vertical rope work.  I know a lot of cavers in this area and if they had a place to work on rope ascencions that is inside and comfortable, especially in the winter months, I know you would have lots of takers for that opportunity.  I too, would love being able to do some ascension work and some practice with pick offs and other kinds of safety practice.

I like to hear music playing while I'm climbing, sometimes it helps to keep my mind a little more clear and I don't stress so much on the harder stuff, if I have a little groove going while I climb.

I'm mostly just looking for a fun commfortable place that will let me get in and get my climbing fix and let me keep my skills warmed and maybe get me in better shape for when I can't hit the actual rocks.

I really hope you guys can get up and running soon.  I am sad to hear that your original plans have fallen through.  I am hoping for some better luck for you and that things will get back on the move quickly.

Be sure to let me knkow when you get the doors open.

P
